Insect Types
Termites <
Do I have Termites?
- Have you got active termites / white ants ?
- When was the last time you had a termite inspection ?
- Is there mud coming out of you skirting or door frame ?
- Are there ‘white ants’ eating a timber structure at your place ?
In Australia there are over 300 different species of termites, of these only six termite species are largely responsible for attacking timber in service, such as our homes and commercial premises. Termite damage bills alone can amount to over $100 million each year. This termite damage bill is greater than that caused by fire.
A large termite colony can cause a significant amount of damage within 12 months. The Australian Standard 3660 recommends homes and other structures have at least annual termite inspections to minimize building damage and expensive building repairs in the future. If you haven’t had a licensed termite inspector carry out any inspection in well over a year, then book a termite professional right away as it will be $200 well spent.
Silverfish <
Do I have Silverfish?
- Are you finding holes in your clothes ?
- Finding silver looking fish like creatures with legs, around your skirtings?
- When was the last time you had your house pest treated ?
Silverfish are usually found scurrying around your skirting boards in your home. They can be found in your roof voids and wardrobes. You may not even see them but are finding holes in your clothes. You have used naphthalene (moth) balls, garlic cloves and still no results?
It’s time to get a pest treatment so you can protect your clothes in the future. General pest control treatments include silverfish in their common household treatments. Dusting of roof voids and treatments to dark areas can assist in eliminating your silverfish problems.
Wasps <
Do I have Wasps?
- Do you have a wasp nest hanging from your window sill ?
- Are there wasps regularly visiting the nest ?
- Do you get allergic reactions to wasp or bee stings ?
- Are they bees or are they wasps ?
Wasp nests are usually found on external walls, awnings and window sills. Wasps generally produce visual nests, ranging from the size of a 20 cent piece to the size of a dinner plate. Bees however build nests within the structure of a building, stump or tree trunk where the nest is not visible.
There is nothing you can do to prevent wasps from nesting at your place. Do not hose them, they must be eradicated professionally as they will only relocate to another spot and keep breeding.
Borers <
Do I have Borers?
- Are your floorboards becoming brittle ?
- Got squiggly lines in your polished timber floors ?
- Have you found dust piles in imported furniture ?
Borers can be found in hardwood and softwood timbers. Depending on the species and the life of the seasoned timber will determine if the borer is active or in active. Most common borers found in sound timber in Sydney are ANOBIUM BORER and LYCTUS BORER. Overseas borers may be exotic and dangerous so have them treated in the correct manner.
Borers can also be found in furniture. Furniture can be treated using a fumigation technique. It is wise to get all furniture with borers in them treated especially if they have just been imported from overseas.
Cockroaches <
Do I have Cockroaches?
- Your kitchen is nice and clean ?
- You clean up after yourself ?
- BUT you still have cockroaches ?
- Do you want them gone, NOW ?
The large cockroaches are big and ugly and confine themselves to your roof voids and subfloors. They are also in your gardens, fence lines and your sheds. We pest control cockroaches out of your premises and keep them out for at least 9 months.
Cockroaches are pests in residences, commercial buildings and industrial complexes. Cockroaches congregate in micro habitats with high humidity usually around or in close proximity to food production of food storage areas. Cockroaches are found indoors and outdoors. Cockroaches are scavengers and will eat almost anything e.g.: dead animals, vegetable materials, cardboard, fabrics, glue, hair and book bindings.
Ants <
Do I have Ants?
- Sand piles throughout your paving or footpath ?
- Small black ants annoying you in your kitchen ?
- Brown ants on crumbs, dog bowls and skirting’s ?
- Do you have rows and rows of ants entering your home ?
Ants come in all shapes, colours and sizes. In the past we didn’t have the technology with pesticides as we have today. These days we identify the ant problem then we treat them accordingly. Depending on the species, depends on the action taken.
Ant treatments can be carried out over multiple visits. Generally it doesn’t just take one hit. Ants nest in paths, pavers, structural walls and roof voids. They don’t eat houses but love to nest in them.
Mosquitoes <
Do I have Mosquitoes?
- Six legs ?
- One pair of wings ?
- A large movable head ?
- Long piercing mouthparts ?
- Large compound eyes ?
Within Australia there are more than 300 different species of Mosquito but only a small number are of major concern. Several important human diseases are transmitted throughout Australia by these insects.
Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes include Dengue Fever, Australian Encephalitis, Ross River Virus and Barmah Forest Virus; Malaria has been transmitted locally in Australia only rarely in recent decades. In addition to being disease vectors, mosquitoes can cause major disruptions, through their persistent biting, to occupational, recreational and social activities. Ask our Pest Professionals for more advice on repellents, attract machines and ways to reduce areas around you which have stagnant water which Mosquitoes love to breed in.
