Possums
- Are you hearing noises in your roof ?
- Does it sound like an elephant at night ?
- Is it the same time in the evening and/or morning ?
- Do you have trees or branches touching your roof top ?
Possums love to sleep in your roofs during the day. They are nocturnal creatures who play by night and sleep by day. Possums heard in the roof usually sound like elephants walking on your ceiling. They exit and enter at the same time every night and morning. They can only access your roof if you have branches or a tree touching.
Catch / proof and release programs are carried out to fix our possum problems. We set cages overnight within the roof void. We return the next day to retrieve the possums caught but while we have them in the cages, we proof off the holes with mesh. The mesh is usually only temporary until the hole is fixed properly by a licensed builder. We then release the possums within a 50m radius just in case they have any young. If noises persist, we will set cages again immediately. If we do not catch any possums and we can determine that the likelihood of the problems is not possums then we generally bait the roof areas for rodents.
Possums are marsupials and are temporary pests of houses. Two species most encountered are the Ring Tailed Possum and the Brush Tailed Possum.
Possums naturally live in cavities of trees. They shelter there during the day and emerge to feed and explore at night. Possums enter roof voids when their natural nesting sites have been removed, mainly through broken tiles, damaged eaves and displaced ridge capping. When in the roof they make noises at night, urinate and defecate on ceiling plaster, causing stains and odours.
